Gayatri is a 30-year-old widow, who lives with her 2.5-year-old boy. At 16, she eloped with Shiv Kumar, 45, who had three children. With no support from either sets of parents, Gayatri worked as a maid. In February 2018, she delivered a boy in the government hospital of Sector 22, Chandigarh. Both mother and child were underweight.
In October 2018, Shiv Kumar committed suicide. DIR India adopted Gayatri in the Nutrition Improvement Priority Program (NIPP) where as a lactating mother, she is fed a high protein diet and supplied with basic amenities and supplements so that the growth and health of the child improves. During the Covid-19 Pandemic lockdown, she was given regular supplies of groceries on a monthly basis by DIR India with the help of Ma Foundation.
